Japanese counters with audio

Japanese uses counters after a number. The counter depends on the thing you count. People use にん, long objects use ほん, flat items use まい, machines use だい, books use さつ, small animals use ひき, actions or floors use かい, and minutes use ふん with sound changes to ぷん and ぶん in set spots. Learn the pattern, then repeat out loud with the audio. Every table here shows the correct form and plays the numeral part only. That keeps the page fast and still gives you the timing you need.

Audio buttons play the number only. Example 一本 uses the いち audio, 三本 uses the さん audio, and so on.

People にん (irregular 1 and 2)

にん is regular after 3. One person is ひとり and two people is ふたり. Both are unique forms and used everywhere. 七人 can be しちにん or ななにん. In real speech ななにん is clearer. For group sizes in venues, schools, and travel, にん is the standard counter.

Quick rule
Use ひとり and ふたり for one and two. Use ななにん and きゅうにん for 7 and 9 if you want zero confusion.

ほん flips to ぽん and ぼん in fixed places. 1, 6, 8, 10, 100 use a sokuon っ then ぽん or っぽん. 3 and 30 use ぼん. 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 stay with ほん. Use ぽん and ぼん cleanly. Do not stretch the vowel. This counter is for pens, bottles, umbrellas, trees, anything long and narrow.

こ is the safest counter for small, solid things. 1, 6, 8, 10 become いっこ, ろっこ, はっこ, じゅっこ. The rest are regular. Use it for apples, boxes, rocks, snacks. When you do not know the specific counter, こ works in daily talk.

まい is fully regular. Use it for paper, tickets, plates, photos, banknotes. No sound flips. Focus on clean pacing.

だい is regular. Use it for cars, computers, TVs, fridges. Speak the number cleanly and keep だい short.

One book and ten books take a short pause っ before さつ. Eight books also takes はっさつ. The rest stay regular. This counter is also used for magazines and notebooks.

Small animals ひき with ぴき and びき

ひき shares the same flip pattern as ほん. 1 6 8 10 take っぴき, 3 and 30 take びき, the rest are ひき. Use it for cats, dogs, fish, insects. For large animals use 頭とう instead.

Times and floors かい

Use かい for times you do something and also for floors in a building. Basement floors take ちか. First floor is いっかい. Same sound flips as こ and ひき on 1 6 8 10.

Minutes ふん with ぷん and ぶん

Minutes follow a fixed pattern. 1 3 4 6 8 10 become いっぷん, さんぷん, よんぷん, ろっぷん, はっぷん, じゅっぷん. 2 5 7 9 become にふん, ごふん, ななふん, きゅうふん. Use these shapes for real time and for duration.

じゅうごふん uses the じゅうご audio. にじゅうよんぷん uses the にじゅうよん audio. にじゅうはっぷん uses the にじゅうはち audio.
